Ode To The Artist: Siwa

We’re back with a new Ode To The Artist and this week I wanted to put the spotlight on Korean folk singer-songwriter Siwa.

In her YouTube profile she wrote this: “These songs keep you company in silence.” and I think that is such a wonderful description of her music. Her discography focuses a lot on her soft, warm vocals and the pleasant sound of her acoustic guitar.

Debut

Siwa debuted with her titular mini-album ‘Siwa’. This was written in the album description: “The relaxation provided by the music of ‘Siwa’ is not the comfort of a high-quality sofa that is soft enough to relax your back, but the comfort of a neat and small wooden chair. Music with no pretense, honesty and sincerity.” I love the sentiment.

In 2009 she was briefly in the duo SIWARAINBOW. They released two albums together; ‘We are all together’ and ‘We are all alone’.

Her first solo full-length album came out in 2010. ‘Walking Around’ is a wonderful album that feels authentic in its mesmerizing musical flow.

Siwa’s EP ‘Down To Earth’ was released in 2011.

Two years later ‘Siwa, coffee’ came out. I love the accordion in the title track ‘Masi’s song’.

Her third full album was released in 2014. ‘The Passing of Time’ has a wonderful arrangement of string instruments.

Themes

The release of the 2016 individual singles happened in themes of three. There’s the collection of ‘Breath of love’, ‘Echoes of happenstance 1’ and ‘Behind the love’.

In response to the 2017 Sewol Ferry tragedy, singers Kim Mok-in x Siwa x Hwang Pu-ha teamed up for a music release to help fund the families of the victims.

Siwa’s fourth full-length album came out in 2020. ‘I’m Home’

She has dropped three singles in 2021, so I think that there’s an album coming soon. ‘Gently, by your side’, ‘Waltz at night’ and ‘distance to breathe’ are three lovely singles that take a look at loneliness.

Siwa has had a wonderful career so far with stunning releases that are super soothing and well-written. I hope you’re able to be comforted by her music as I believe that’s what she intends with her discography.

Lastly you can find her on Spotify here. Go check out her Instagram.
