Mini Album Review: IU – Love Poem

Today is a great day. We got TXT’s new music video and we can finally listen to IU’s fifth mini album ‘Love Poem’.

‘Love Poem’ has six tracks. One of which was released two weeks ago. She stated in her Vlive that she helped write all of the songs. All of the songs are centered around love. Not just in the boyfriend girlfriend kind of love, but it could also be the love for yourself or the love for humanity.

Let’s dive in because I can’t wait.

Love Poem

The first song is ‘Unlucky’. It starts off with very whimsical piano chords. I love the layered voices and then we have the little ‘plop’ that made me chuckle. It reminded me of the show ‘Bakvis’ from the channel ‘Ketnet’. That was a huge part of my childhood, so I’m feeling melancholy.

Next up is ‘The visitor’. It sounds a bit darker than ‘Unlucky’. There’s this jazzy, old school vibe to it, especially with the sound effect of the recorder. Towards the end, it’s just the guitar and her voice, making it sound like an acoustic session. I 100% dig it. It’s definitely one of my favorites.

Number three is ‘Blueming’. And there’s a video!

In her song introduction she writes that this song carries the meaning of the moment right before you confess to someone. The blue roses stand for the blue text messages that come as an earthquake with the vibration of your phone. ‘Blueming’ is super fun to listen to. Drums, I hear you! It’s a certified bop!

Then we have the song ‘above the time’ and just WOW. I’m caught up in my feelings here. IU’s vocal power really shines through here. Also can we talk about that Irish jig in the bridge? I love it!! Listen carefully to the instrumentals, I need to see this live with an entire orchestra.

‘Above the time’ carries a lot of references to an old song of hers: ‘YOU&I’.

After the intense ride that was ‘above the time’, we go a bit more intimate with the song ‘Lullaby’. It’s a soft, soft ballad that sounds very tender. We just hear a beautiful melody and IU’s voice. If you need help falling asleep, this is the perfect lullaby for you. There are no fanciful tricks, it kind of feels like she’s right next to you. Honest and pure.

We close off the album with ‘Love Poem’. This song really strikes a chord. If you’re having a hard day, this song can be your comfort.

“I’ll be there, behind you who walks alone
Singing till the end, this song will be endless
Listen carefully just for a second
I will sing for you who walks long nights than most”

This was definitely worth the wait. IU has been through a lot, so go show your love and support and leave some nice comments and stream the album.
