June Korean Indie DisKovery

June has come and gone and it’s time for a brand new Korean Indie DisKovery. This month we had some really interesting releases. I leaned more towards the softer folk and electronic releases this time, because I’ve been in need of some comforting music.

Week 1

Loosen Door has been active since 2019 and he released the EP ‘Small Room’ at the very beginning of this month. It’s a beautiful electronic indie album that balances the instrumentals and the vocals incredibly well.

Rainbow99 blessed us with his new album ‘The Water Cycle’. I really enjoyed listening to ‘EVAPORATION’ as it sounds very cheerful and bright. If you want something a bit softer, definitely listen to ‘RAIN’. It’s jazzy and super, super smooth.

For the next album, I have to be honest and say I’ve had this on repeat since I featured it in the Weekly K-Indie Report. It’s jazzy, it’s acoustic guitars with soft vocals and even a feature of Sunwoo Jung Ah. Lee sang soon has blessed this month with his selftitled EP.

Week 2

Woo Yerin released the absolutely stunning ballad ‘Paradise’. She wrote and composed the track herself. Her vocals literally gave me chills the first time I heard it. There’s such a beautiful clarity to them, it’s a joy to listen to.

The single album ‘Oasis’ released by Kim Minseong is a beautiful folksy comeback. We get a rather simple instrumentation, but he manages to fill the room with his acoustic guitar and his rich vocals.

Jang Pilsoon came out with the full-length album ‘petrichor’. This album gives me such a cinematic feeling, it’s hard to put in words. Basically it makes me feel bigger than myself, which is something that movie soundtracks are prone to do to me. Really, just put your good headphones on, find a nice spot to sit and just listen to the full thing.

Week 3

Kim Ahyun released the EP ‘Every you, in Every moment’. Her title track is stunning, but the opening single ‘Middle in the sea’ has my heart. It’s absolutely great and deserves a spot in every indie pop playlist.

IT’S came out with ‘Childhood of the sea’ featuring sowoon. This song is so awesome. It’s jazz meets synth and an electronic beat with a super jazzy voice. It’s a 10/10 for me. The music video is a whole vibe and I will feature it at one point as an MV rec. There’s just something about it that hits the spot.

Lim Soo Yeon released the EP ‘Oasis Bay ½’. It’s absolutely lovely indie folk music. I love discovering new female singers in folk and Lim Soo Yeon was a joy to discover. Her EP is filled with beautiful guitar and stunning strings. That, together with her great vocals and lyrics makes for an absolute gem. I’m just waiting until this album blows up. Her single ‘Once Again’ is completely in English and it’s worth paying attention to.

Week 4

Our girl JADE is back with her new album ‘Hometown’. I’m so in love with her vocals and her groove. She balances between indie and R&B easily. Her song ‘Bug’ featuring Sylo Nozra is so jazzy! If you’d like to read more about her, you can read our Indie Pick feature about her.

The band LUAMEL came out with the full album ‘Orbital’ and it is a ride. It’s indie rock to its core and it’s absolutely brilliant. The last song on the album ‘Stars’ has such a beautiful soundscape. It’s guaranteed to pull out any emotion.

ID:EARTH dropped a new single album ‘CAVE’ with three new singles. This is such an experimental single album. It’s so interesting to listen to. She has such a unique vocal tone! Definitely go check this one out.
