Jang Ijae is a singer-songwriter who recently released her first mini-album ‘Nine O’Clock Song’. The mini-album is stunning and I loved it on first listen, so I reached out to see if she would answer some of my questions and luckily she agreed!
In your album description it says you’ve been active in broadcasting, publishing and film. Can you tell us a bit more about that?
앨범 설명에는 당신이 방송, 출판, 영화 분야에서 활동했다고 했는데, 그 활동에 대해 조금 더 말해줄 수 있습니까?
“저는 주로 다큐멘터리 프로그램을 만드는 방송 작가입니다. TV나 극장 등에서 방영되는 각종 영상 콘텐츠를 기획/구성하며 논픽션 글을 쓰고 있고, 인문 교양서 <오래된 질문>(다산 출판사)을 출판했습니다.”
“I am a broadcast writer who mainly makes documentary programs. I plan/compose various video contents aired on TV and theaters and write non-fiction articles. I’ve also published the humanities liberal arts book “Noble Asks” (Dasan Publishing Company).
What made you want to transition into music? Have you always wanted to be a musician?

“전환보다는 확장에 가까운 것 같아요. 늘 하고 싶은 이야기가 있었기 때문에 저에게 맞는 표현 방식을 찾는 데 관심이 많았습니다. 그러다 글, 영상, 음악에 차례로 매료된 셈인데요. 마음속 깊이 감춰둔 이야기까지도 수면 위로 단숨에 끌어올리는 음악의 힘에 강하게 이끌렸어요. 저의 어떤 부분은 음악을 통해서만 다뤄질 수 있는 것 같습니다.
학생 때 취미로 밴드를 했었고 기타를 갖게 된 이후로는 혼자서 멋대로 노래하며 놀기를 좋아했습니다. 엉망이거나 쓸쓸한 날에도 흥얼거리다 보면 금방 생생한 감각을 되찾을 수 있었어요. 서늘했던 마음이 달궈지고요. 노래를 만들어 부르며 스스로를 위로하고 새롭게 하는 일에 차츰 익숙해졌습니다. 거창한 포부를 가지고 음악 활동을 시작했다기보다는, 오랜 시간 소리 죽여 부르던 노래들이 방안에 쌓이고 쌓이다 때가 되어 자연스럽게 창밖으로 흘러 나가게 되었다고 생각합니다. 아직 가야 할 길이 멀고, 지금도 저의 음악이 무엇인지 느리지만 꾸준히 찾아 나가는 중입니다.”
“I think it’s more of an extension than a transition. I’ve always wanted to talk about something, so I was interested in finding the right way to express it. I was fascinated by writing, video, and music one after another. Even the story hidden deep in my heart was strongly attracted by the power of music that lifted it to the surface at once. I think some parts of me can only be dealt with through music.
When I was a student, I was in a band as a hobby and after I got a guitar, I liked to sing and play by myself. If I hum on a messy or lonely day, I could regain my vivid sense quickly. My cool heart heats up. I gradually got used to making songs and comforting myself by doing new things. Rather than starting music activities with grand aspirations, I think that the songs that I had been singing for a long time were piled up and piled up in the room and naturally flowed out of the window. There is still a long way to go, and I am still slowly but steadily looking for what my music is.”
Can you tell us about the album cover? Is there an image of someone hugging underneath the flowers? You made the cover yourself?

“맞아요, 앨범 커버는 제가 그린 그림과 두 사람이 껴안고 있는 사진을 하나로 합친 것입니다. 사진 역시 제가 직접 찍었고요. 두 이미지의 합성은 앨범의 공동 프로듀서이자 훌륭한 커버 디자이너이기도 한 Kim Daeinn(@daeinn_kim) 님이 작업해 주셨습니다.
우리가 새로운 세계와 진실로 마주할 때, 서로 뒤섞이며 이전과 다른 사람이 되어가는 과정이란 너무나 놀랍고도 아름다운 것 같습니다. 그런 순간의 파장과 무늬에 대해 상상하고 시간이 흐른 후 남겨진 흔적들을 들여다보며 이번 앨범을 만들었습니다.”
“That’s right, the album cover is a combination of my drawing and a picture of two people hugging. I took the picture myself. The combination of the two images was done by Kim Daeinn (@daeinn_kim), the album’s co-producer and great cover designer.
When we face the new world with the truth, the process of mixing up and becoming different people seems so amazing and beautiful. I made this album by imagining the repercussions and patterns of such a moment and looking at the traces left after time.”
‘Nine O’Clock Song’ is your first EP but also your first official release. Can you tell us why you wanted this EP to be your first release?
‘Nine O’Clock Song’은 첫 번째 EP이자 첫 번째 정식 발매입니다. 이번 EP가 왜 첫 번째 발매가 되길 원하셨는지 말씀해 주시겠습니까?
“재작년 겨울에 ‘Spring Feeling’을 만들고 나서 처음으로 발매하고 싶다는 마음이 분명해졌어요. 그다음은 자연스럽게, 가지고 있던 곡 중에 ‘Spring Feeling’과 한 앨범으로 묶여야 할 곡들을 추리게 되었고요. 곡 수와 상관없이 하나의 줄기로 엮이기를 바랐어요. 또 이번 EP에 실린 곡들은 지금 이 시절의 저의 일부를 담고 있기 때문에 너무 늦지 않게 완결하고 싶다는 바람도 있었습니다. 저는 하루하루가 다르게 변하니까요.”
“After making “Spring Feeling” two years ago, it became clear that I wanted to release it for the first time. And then naturally, I chose the songs that I had to combine with “Spring Feeling”. Regardless of the number of songs, I wanted it to be woven into one stem. Also, the songs in this EP contain a part of me from this time, so I wanted to finish it not too late. I change day by day.”
How does ‘Spring Feeling’ tie in with the mini-album?

“어떤 만남은 너무 특별해서 첫 눈맞춤의 순간에 ‘이제 내 삶은 전과 달라지겠구나’ 하고 즉각 알아챌 때가 있잖아요. 그렇게 인생의 한 계절이 바뀌게 되고요. 상대는 사람일 수도 행위일 수도 있고… 저에게는 이번 데뷔도 마찬가지의 사건이라고 할 수 있는데요. ‘Spring Feeling’은 그런 순간을 알아차리고 세밀히 감각하고 관조하는 노래입니다. 차분한 열정으로 앨범의 문을 열어줍니다.”
“Some encounters are so special that at the first eye contact, you immediately realize that your life will be different from before. That’s how one season of life changes. It can be a person, it can be an act… For me, this debut is the same thing.
“Spring Feeling” is a song that recognizes those moments, carefully senses them and pays attention to them. It opens the door to the album with calm passion.”
Did you record your own footsteps for ‘밤산책’ (‘Night Walk’)?
(‘Night Walk’) ‘밤산책”에서 본인의 발자국/발소리를 직접 녹음하셨습니까?
“네, 평소처럼 집 근처를 산책하며 녹음했습니다. 저의 발걸음 소리로 ‘Night Walk’의 드럼 비트를 만들었어요. 도시의 밤길을 걸으면 사람의 형체는 어둠에 묻히지만 발걸음 소리는 오히려 두드러집니다. 여간해선 숨길 수 없고 마치 존재의 증명처럼 온 사방에 울리고요. 그래서 만약 밤 산책이 노래가 된다면 발걸음 소리로 시작해야 한다고 오래전부터 생각해 왔습니다.”
“Yes, I recorded it while taking a walk near my house as usual. I made the drum beat of “Night Walk” with my footsteps.
Walking along the night road of the city, the shape of the person is buried in darkness, but the sound of footsteps is rather noticeable. It can’t be hidden at all times, but it rings everywhere like a proof of existence. So I’ve been thinking for a long time that if a night walk becomes a song, you should start with the sound of footsteps.”
Can you tell us a bit more about the song ‘나를 설레게 하는 것들’ (‘Things that make me me’)? How did you come about writing the song?
‘나를 만드는 것들’이라는 노래에 대해 좀 더 알려주실 수 있나요? 당신은 어떻게 그 노래를 쓰게 되었습니까?
“저는 틈날 때마다 세계 곳곳의 바다를 다니는 스쿠버 다이버이기도 합니다. 깊은 바닷속으로 뛰어들 때마다 매번 감격하고 이 세상과 나에 대해 배우게 되는데요. 가사에 나오듯이 바다는 저에게 ‘아무리 말해도 지루하지 않은’ 기쁨이고요. ‘아무리 멀어도 멀어지지 않는‘, 바다와 연결되어 있다는 감각은 언제나 저에게 특별한 용기를 줍니다. 저 자신을 잃지 않도록 지켜줘요.
‘Things that make me me’는 제가 바다 가까이 밀착하며 얻어온 인상들이 몽타주 된 노래이고, 바다에 (또한 저와 바다로 이어져 있는 모든 이들에게) 바치는 헌사입니다. 순수한 기쁨과 절대적인 애정에 대한 이야기고요. 이번 EP에서 가장 로맨틱한 사랑 노래입니다!”
“I am also a scuba diver who goes to the sea around the world whenever I have time. Every time I jump into the deep sea, I’m thrilled and learn about this world and myself. As the lyrics say, the ocean is a joy that won’t be boring. The sense of being connected to the sea, “no matter how far away you are,” always gives me special courage. Please protect me from losing myself.
“Things That Make Me Me” is a montage of the impressions I’ve gained from getting close to the sea, and it’s a tribute to the sea (also to me and everyone connected to the sea). It’s about pure joy and absolute affection. It’s the most romantic love song on this EP!”
Who is ‘Coco’? What’s the story behind this track?
‘코코’가 누구죠? 이 트랙의 비하인드 스토리는 무엇입니까?
“Coco는 사라져가는 모든 이들의 이름입니다. 살면서 만나고 헤어짐을 끝없이 반복해야 한다는 사실을 떠올리면 여전히 슬퍼집니다. 어떻게 하면 당연한 이별을 당연하게 받아들일 수 있을까요? 사라지는 것을 사랑하는 일, 언젠가 헤어질 것을 알면서도 영원할 것처럼 사랑하는 일은 얼마나 슬프고도 아름다운가요. ‘Coco’는 다시는 부를 수 없게 될 사람을 영원히 부르는 노래입니다.”
“Coco is the name of everyone who is disappearing. I still feel sad when I think about the fact that I have to meet and break up endlessly in my life. How can I take a natural break-up for granted? How sad and beautiful it is to love disappearing, to love as if it will last forever even though you know that you will break up someday. “Coco” is a song that calls for a person who will never be able to sing again.”
The narration in ‘Nine O’Clock Song’ feels like a dream. How was it writing this song and then hearing the finished track?
Nine O’Clock Song’의 내레이션은 꿈만 같습니다. 이 곡을 작곡하고 완성된 곡을 들었을 때 기분은 어땠어요?
“‘Nine O’Clock Song’는 가사를 먼저 썼습니다. 그리고 멜로디를 붙였는데 왠지 어딘가 부족한 느낌이 들어서 작업이 늘어지던 와중에 문득 재밌는 아이디어가 떠올랐어요. ‘Nine O’Clock Song’ 가사에서 그대와 내가 주고받는 목소리나 숨소리는 가락이 되고, 속삭임은 노랫말이 되거든요. 여러 형태의 어조 자체가 멜로디인 거죠. 그런 은유를 직접적으로 차용하면 어떻게 될지 궁금했어요. 그래서 만들었던 멜로디를 싹 다 버리고 처음부터 다시 시작했어요. 우선 개별적으로 기타 연주를 만들어 녹음한 다음에 들으면서 누군가에게 혹은 자신에게 말하듯이 노래했어요. 그에 맞게 가사도 바뀌었고요. 굉장히 즐겁게 또 거침없이 진행되어서 하룻밤 만에 거의 마칠 수 있었어요. 완성된 곡을 들었을 때는 그날의 선택이 옳았다는 것을 확신하게 됐습니다.”
“I wrote the lyrics for “Nine O’Clock Song” first. And after that I added the melody, but I felt something was lacking, so while I was working on it, I suddenly came up with an interesting idea. In the lyrics of “Nine O’Clock Song”, the voices and breathing sounds that you and I exchange become melodies, and the whisper becomes lyrics. The tone itself is a melody.
I was wondering what would happen if I borrowed that metaphor directly. So I threw away all the melodies I made and started over. First, I made and recorded a guitar performance individually, and then I sang as if I were talking to someone or myself while listening to it. The lyrics were changed accordingly. We had a lot of fun and we were able to finish it in one night. When I heard the completed song, I was convinced that the choice was right.”
How was filming the music video? How did you do the shot with the guitar?

“‘Nine O’Clock Song’ 뮤직비디오는 수중 촬영 스튜디오에서 전문 스태프들과 함께 작업했습니다. 아무런 장비 없이 맨몸으로 숨을 참고 5m 수조 바닥으로 내려가서 연기해야 하는 고난이도의 작업이었어요. 저는 수중모델이 처음이었기 때문에 무척 긴장했는데요. 많은 분이 도움을 주셨고, 특히 각 분야 최고의 아티스트인 Film director Yeon Wangmo (@momoludens)와 Underwater Videographer Kim Miru (@indieocean) 두 분이 저에게 굉장한 에너지를 불어넣어 주셨습니다.
가장 어려웠던 건 기타를 안고 물속에서 천천히 가라앉는 장면이었는데 그것이 뮤직비디오의 하이라이트였어요. 우리는 꼭 그 이미지를 얻고 싶었고, 여러 번 시도 끝에 결국 해냈습니다. 깊은 물 속에서 기타를 쳤을 때의 생소한 느낌도 기억에 많이 남아요. 정말 멋진 경험이었어요.”
“I worked on the music video for “Nine O’Clock Song” with professional staff at the underwater shooting studio. It was a difficult task to hold my breath without any equipment and go down to the bottom of the 5m water tank to act. I was very nervous because it was my first underwater shoot. Many people helped me, especially Film director Yeon Wangmo (@momoludens) (editor’s note; Yeon Wangmo is the director of ‘Mother Dearest’ (2022)) and Underwater Videographer Kim Miru (@indieocean), who are the best artists in each field, they gave me great energy.
The most difficult part was the scene where I slowly sink in the water with my guitar, which was the highlight of the music video. We really wanted to get that image, and after many attempts, we finally did it. I also remember the unfamiliar feeling when I played the guitar in the deep water. It was a wonderful experience.”
If I understand it correctly, the album takes us through the evening and then the night to nine o’clock in the morning?

트랙이 넘어갈수록 밤이 깊어 갑니다. 사랑의 감정도 무르익고요. 마지막 트랙에 다다르면 모든 시간성이 아홉시라는 한 시점으로 통합되는 경험을 하게 되죠. 이 세상에는 우주의 거대한 순환이, 거스를 수 없는 흐름이 있고, 그럼에도 불구하고 사랑에는 그 모든 질서를 초월하게 하는 힘이 있는 것 같습니다.”
“It’s a very interesting story. I hope my album will be interpreted in many ways depending on the listener. You can say that it gives an unintended feeling.
The night is getting deeper as the track goes on. The feelings of love ripen. When you get to the last track, you have the experience of integrating all of the time into one point, nine o’clock. In this world, there is a huge cycle of the universe, an irresistible flow, and yet love seems to have the power to transcend all that order.”
