EP Review: Ha Sung Woon – Twilight Zone

Ha Sung Woon is continuing his solo career with a bang with his EP ‘Twilight Zone’. Sung Woon was part of the group Wanna One and is still a current member of Hotshot. Let’s dive into this EP!

Twilight Zone

We start of with the track ‘Lazy Lovers’. Ha Sung Woon’s breathy opening really sets the tone immediately. It’s a catchy, sexy track with some really funky synths in the chorus. I’m totally loving the layered vocals towards the end.

Next up is the title track ‘Get Ready’ that came with a spiffy music video.

The opening of the music video where Sung Woon is swimming, is absolutely stunning and I can totally forgive the green screen monster trucks because of it. The song itself is funky and up-tempo and just really, really fun to listen to. I like the mix of grooviness and funk and it makes it a wild ride.

‘Puzzle’ is next and feels a little bit softer. I really like the staccato from the violins. The heavy bass that comes in during the chorus is superb. ‘Puzzle’ feels like a very interesting balance between heavy bass driven and airy, light verses. He literally even sings ‘feeling the bass’, so yes, I did feel the bass and it is awesome.

After that we get ‘Lie’. We get some beautiful vocals with quite a pop-rock feel for the instrumentation. I really enjoyed the way the verses are being driven with the guitars. Excellent!

The fifth track is ‘Curiou’s’. What a happy, fun song! I’ve no idea why they wrote curious the way they did, but that’s besides the point. Ha Sung Woon co-wrote and co-composed this track together with VENDORS. I’m in love with the general vibe of this song and I really enjoyed the little samples they used throughout, also that little raspberry is just the cutest thing.

The last song on the EP is ‘Twinkle Twinkle’. We start off groovy with some really nice bass. Sung Woon is singing in a lower register in the beginning. And it is smooth like caramel. Oof, what a way to end this EP. He’s playing with his vocals when the piano comes in and basically this entire track shows off his vocal prowess. I may be in love a little bit.

Overall

‘Twilight Zone’ by Ha Sung Woon is honestly amazing. It’ll definitely be remembered and is up there on my favorite albums from this year.
