It’s officially a brand new month, so it’s time for our December Korean Indie DisKovery. We had some really great releases, a lot of them Christmas themed for obvious reasons. A big chunk of them I added to our K-Indie Christmas Spotify playlist which you can find here.
Week 1
Tresbonbon released their single ‘CAT’. The single is super funky and a shot of serotonin. I love the cute effects added to the vocals. It feels very new wave while the synths keep it firmly within the funk region. The transition to the more rock segments are quite shocking. It’s great.
Van Siian really blessed us with her album ‘Tea and Rice’. She takes us on a journey through her notes. It’s beautiful and a super smooth listen.
Week 2
The duo An0Kevin came out with the jazzy EP ‘Motions’. An0 and Kevin worked together to create this very eclectic sounding EP. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to ‘Time’ and ‘Eclipse’.
Johnhasabigmouth was a new discovery for me. ‘WE ARE’ is only his second EP, but it’s a super smooth mix of R&B and electronic music. It’s super cool.
Sunwashere is back to blow us away. ‘Linger on’ is a stunning single that creates a lovely warm heartbreaking sound.
Week 3
Gwon.u dropped the EP ‘Grab’. This was such a great listen. In the album description he wrote that a lot of the album has to do with loneliness and hoping that someone will join you. It’s rock mixed with a certain quirkiness that makes it adorable and relatable.
1/N really came out with some amazing music. Their new EP ‘Flower Shower’ is super intense and very comforting. The use of the audio samples is well done and creates such an interesting effect.
DOF2D released the mini ‘We don’t have to cry’. She really blew me away with her funky use of the bass.
Week 4
Whale Yorke delivered a really great song with ‘Here I Am’. It’s very wholesome and the layering of the instrumentals are great. I love the addition of the playground and the tinkling piano.
I really enjoyed the single by honnip and gwac. ‘Dogs’ is a very intriguing listen. Use your good headphones because there’s a lot of panning going on and to get the full experience you need it blasted into your eardrums.
That’s it for this December Korean Indie DisKovery. I hope you (re)discovered some gems of the K-Indie scene. Let us know what your favorite release was this month!
