[Indie Pick] PAHYO

PAHYO is our brand new Indie Pick. This time we’re heading into the Indie Jazz realm with some amazing music!

PAHYO debuted in August 2019 with the single ‘Cat’. It’s an uplifting, cute song that just gives you a shot of dopamine while listening to it. She’s a singer-songwriter so she wrote the lyrics, composed and arranged it herself. PAHYO even produced the track herself.

In November she came back with the single ‘Paper Crane’. This self-written, self-produced ballad tugs at the heart strings with the beautiful piano line. I put the lyrics through Google Translate and though I don’t feel comfortable sharing that in the article, (because of errors) they do read like a poem.

This February PAHYO released her single ‘Thin ice’ and it kind of feels like the middle ground between ‘Cat’ and ‘Paper Crane’ in the sense that it doesn’t feel sad, but it doesn’t feel extremely happy either.

I love the addition of the filter on the piano at one point. It makes it sound old-timey and very nostalgic. There’s also some interesting play in the vocal tone.

One of my favorite tracks by PAHYO is the single ‘Fish’. This one she released in May and I love the vocal line in this. Her timbre is just so pretty! I feel like it’s a mix between IU and Lee Jin Ah and I’m utterly in love.

EP

Her latest release, the EP ‘MARILYN’ combines all the previous releases and adds the song ‘MARILYN’.

The single is light and fresh and playful. My first reaction was, this should have been released in Spring. The song is about her cat and if that isn’t adorable I don’t know what is.

This is the cat by the way. The album cover is a painting of said cat, that she painted herself.

That’s it for this week’s Indie Pick. PAHYO doesn’t have that many songs out yet, but after discovering her while I was writing the Weekly K-Indie Report, I couldn’t stop myself.

Her music makes me happy so I hope the same counts for you as well.

You can find her on Spotify here.

Also go check out her Instagram and say hi!
