‘Girl Scout’ is a 2008 fun, character-driven action comedy that puts four very different women at the centre of a pretty chaotic situation. Set in a struggling neighbourhood in Seoul, the story follows I-man, Bong-soon, Mi-kyung and Eun-ji, four women who are all struggling financially and hoping to save enough money to open a store together. But when the head of their credit union runs off with their life savings, their plans are completely derailed. Instead of simply accepting their fate, they decide to go after the money themselves, forming their own little girl scout troop in the process.
What I really liked about this movie is that these feel like real characters. None of them have particularly easy lives, and they’re all just trying to get by in their own way. The stolen money isn’t just some random plot device either, it represents a chance for them to actually change their circumstances. That gives their increasingly ridiculous mission a surprisingly relatable foundation.
The movie also focuses a lot on the women themselves and, honestly, that was probably my favourite part. They bicker. A lot. They don’t always get along, and there’s definitely some friction between them, but that makes their interactions feel much more natural. They aren’t instantly best friends who suddenly work together perfectly. Instead, their relationship develops slowly as they’re forced to spend more time together and deal with one disaster after another.
I also liked that it takes a while for the layers to peel back. You get little glimpses into each woman’s life and personality, and gradually you start to understand why they act the way they do. It gives the characters more depth than you might expect from what initially looks like a fairly straightforward comedy about four women chasing stolen money.
And, of course, there’s plenty of chaos along the way. Their lack of experience makes some of their attempts to recover the money particularly entertaining, and the comedy works best when it comes from their personalities and the way they react to whatever ridiculous situation they’ve gotten themselves into. It never feels like they suddenly become super-skilled action stars . They’re still these ordinary women who are way out of their depth.
Overall, ‘Girl Scout’ was a good watch. It’s not necessarily the most polished or groundbreaking movie, but I really enjoyed how much attention it gives its female characters and their interactions. The constant bickering, gradual character development and very different personalities make the group surprisingly engaging, and you keep watching because you want to see how they’ll handle the next mess they get themselves into. A fun little movie with a lot of heart underneath all the chaos.
