[Review] Pretty Crazy

In this edition of our movie review, we’re talking about a recent production that brilliantly blends comedy, romance, and folklore into one entertaining story. Let’s dive into ‘Pretty Crazy’.

Directed and written by Lee Sang-geun, ‘Pretty Crazy’ tells the story of a man who falls head over heels for his new neighbour, only to discover that she and her family hide a supernatural secret.

Love at First Sight… and a Twist

Gil-goo (Ahn Bo-hyun) is an unemployed man who spends his days perfecting his skills at claw machines, proudly collecting an impressive number of prizes. His mundane life suddenly changes when a new family moves into his building. Among them is Jeon Seon-ji (Im Yoon-ah), a charming and mysterious woman who instantly captivates him.

But things take a strange turn. One night, Gil-goo spots Seon-ji acting completely unlike herself, her appearance and behaviour drastically different from the woman he met in the daylight. Bewildered, he decides to keep an eye on her, only to witness more strange transformations as night falls.

One evening, after seeing Seon-ji in a heated fight with a man, Gil-goo rushes to her aid, only to find that the man is actually her father, desperately trying to restrain her.

A Family Curse

Searching for answers, Gil-goo confronts Seon-ji’s father, who finally reveals the truth: the women in their family are cursed, possessed by an ancient demon that has haunted them for generations, dating back to the Joseon era.

At night, the demon awakens inside Seon-ji, taking full control of her body. Despite his fear and confusion, Gil-goo’s curiosity, and growing affection, pull him deeper into her world. When her father becomes ill, Gil-goo steps in as Seon-ji’s guardian, trying to protect her while uncovering the tragic story behind the demon’s curse.

As he learns more, Gil-goo begins to sympathize with the spirit itself, realising that it’s not evil, but simply a soul searching for peace. Determined to help both Seon-ji and the spirit find freedom, he sets out on a heartfelt and chaotic journey that’s equal parts funny, touching, and mystical.

A Delightful, Unexpected Watch

‘Pretty Crazy’ is a refreshing watch that balances humor, heart, and a hint of horror in a uniquely charming way. While the premise could easily turn dark, the film’s tone stays uplifting, focusing on themes of healing, acceptance, and moving on.

Yoon-ah delivers a standout performance, flawlessly portraying two distinct personas with depth and charisma. Her ability to switch between the sweet, grounded Seon-ji and the fierce, possessed version is nothing short of mesmerising.

With its quirky humour, emotional core, and a sprinkle of the supernatural, ‘Pretty Crazy’ is a total must-watch for anyone looking for something fun, heartfelt, and just a little bit eerie.
