[Review] Uprising

We’re back with a new film review and this time we watched the brand new ‘Uprising’, recently released on Netflix.

Uprising

The movie was written by Park Chan-wook and Shin Cheol. ‘Uprising’ was directed by Kim Sang-man.

‘Uprising’ is a historical war action film and has a ton of incredible talent starring in it.

We follow our main character Cheon Yeong (Gang Dong-won) as he becomes enslaved to the Yi family after a family tragedy. Yi Jong-ryeo (Park Jeong-min) is the son of the highest military official of King Seonjo. The two children become somewhat friends after Cheon Yeong helps Jong-ryeo perform better in his sword training.

However, the political climate and his slave status cause unrest. The Japanese army invades the country and with it a lot of tragedy comes with it. Cheon Yeong and Jong-ryeo become enemies.

Overall

‘Uprising’ is an interesting watch. The acting was excellent and the fight scenes were brilliantly choreographed. I wasn’t fully invested in all of the characters. I think the friendship between the two kids could have been expanded a bit for the full emotional devastation. Also the time jumps were a bit confusing at times.

However for such a dark movie, it was beautifully lit and I didn’t feel like I lost details in the darkness. The fight scene on the beach was very pretty. Also kudos to the soundtrack, because that was a stunning listen.
