2AM

[Time Capsule] 2AM – This song

We’re back with another K-music Time Capsule! Today we’re listening to 2AM’s ‘This Song‘. This was their debut song, all the way back in 2008.

The band

2AM was originally a subgroup of the band ‘One Day’, the other being 2PM. The members were selected via a competition show for JYP Entertainment trainees to debut. However, they split into independent units and debuted separately, so you won’t really find songs by them as ‘One Day’. The idea behind the split was stylistic; 2AM did powerful ballads, 2PM did dance bops. Think about it this way, sad ballads fit better with the late night hour. Both bands debuted in 2008.

All four members have such beautiful voices, and it was nothing short of a stroke of brilliance to have them harmonizing and singing ballads. But nothing good lasts forever, so they eventually went into hiatus in 2015, to follow individual projects. Technically they’ve not disbanded and could in theory start activities as 2AM at some point. But even if they never do, they have already left a very strong legacy. For one, I don’t think there’s a k-pop fan out there who’s not heard ‘Can’t let you go even if I die‘.

The song

And while ‘Can’t let you go’ is certainly their greatest hit, the one we’re listening to today is their debut ‘This song‘. It has a special place in my heart, and I do think it gets overlooked, even though it’s such a lovely tune. So here you have it, enjoy:

Avid manga fan, language nerd, RPG-gamer and coffee addict, I accidentally wandered into K-pop fandom in 2009 and stuck around to share the love ^_^
