[Review] When The Phone Rings

We’re back with a new K-drama Review and this time we’re writing about ‘When the phone rings’. The series started airing in November 2024 and finished last week. You can watch in on Netflix.

‘When the phone rings’ is a 12 episode drama written by Kim Ji-woon and co-directed by Park Sang-woo and Wi Deuk-gyu.

Plot

In the story we follow Hong Hee-joo, played by Chae Soo-bin. Hee-joo is selectively mute and a sign-language reporter for the news. She’s one of the daughters of a wealthy family and is married to Paik Sa-eon (Yoo Yeon-seok), the presidential spokesperson.

Their marriage is a complicated one as he was originally supposed to marry Hee-joo’s sister. Hee-joo and her siblings were in a car accident when they were young and her personal family life is also complicated and filled with strife since they lost the younger brother.

Hee-joo’s car is hacked and she’s kidnapped one night and the kidnapper tries to threaten Sa-eon over the phone. Sa-eon however, doesn’t believe Hee-joo is kidnapped so he responds very callously, hurting Hee-joo’s feelings.

The kidnapper proves to have some interesting ties with our two leads.

Overall

‘When the phone rings’ was such a treat to follow along with. The series is thrilling and has plenty of twists and turns. The chemistry between the two main leads was electric and I loved following their dynamic.

Overall this was an amazing series that will keep you entertained like no other. My only point of criticism is the last episode which felt off and only added to fill the time. The covert mention of the war between Israel and Palestine was done in bad taste in my opinion and was absolutely unnecessary.
