[Review] Family by Choice

In this edition of our drama review, we’re diving into a family drama with a healing, wholesome plot that had us glued to the screen from beginning to end. Let’s talk about ‘Family by Choice.’

Based on the beloved Chinese drama ‘Go Ahead’ by Shui Qianmo and Wang Xiongcheng, ‘Family by Choice’ was written by Hong Si-young and directed by Kim Seung-ho. This touching story follows the deep, unshakable bond between three individuals who, despite not being related by blood, find a family in one another and grow together through life’s many challenges.

Growing Together

Kim San-ha (Hwang In-youp), Yoon Ju-won (Jung Chae-yeon), and Kang Hae-jun (Bae Hyun-sung) first meet as children when fate brings them together during difficult times. Despite their individual family struggles, they grow up under the care of Ju-won’s father, who becomes a guardian and father figure to San-ha and Hae-jun, treating them as if they were his own sons.

San-ha grows up facing many hardships, compounded by the pain of his mother unexpectedly leaving him and his father. Despite this, San-ha becomes a bright, hard working teenager, staying with Ju-won’s family and relying on the stability they and his father provide.

Hae-jun, meanwhile, is initially raised by his young aunt. However, Ju-won’s father soon takes him in, offering him a home and the love and support he desperately needs.

As the trio grows older, their bond deepens, providing each other with comfort and belonging. But the reappearance of figures from their past begins to challenge their once unshakable friendship.

Growing Up

San-ha’s estranged mother (Kwon Jeong-hee) suddenly re-enters his life after 10 years of silence. Just as he is about to graduate high school, she insists that he move to Seoul with her and his younger half-sister to pursue his studies. Despite his initial refusal, San-ha is forced to comply after his mother suffers a debilitating accident, leaving her partially disabled.

Meanwhile, Hae-jun’s father reappears in his life, determined to take him to live in the United States. Although reluctant at first, Hae-jun decides to go, believing it will relieve Ju-won’s father of the financial burden of supporting his university education.

These unexpected changes create physical and emotional distance between the trio, testing the strength of their friendship and redefining their individual paths.

Reuniting

Ten years later, the three friends reunite in their hometown. San-ha and Hae-jun’s return marks a bittersweet moment, as their time apart has deepened old wounds. Ju-won feels abandoned by the two people who were once her closest companions, and their reunion is marked by tension and unresolved emotions.

As adults, the trio must work to rebuild their connection, heal the scars of their pasts, and learn to lean on each other once again. Through this process, they find not only friendship but also personal growth, reconciliation, and even the possibility of love.
