In this edition of our drama review, we’re diving into a recent rom-com that blends witty storytelling with heartfelt moments and an impressive cast. Let’s talk about ‘Dynamite Kiss‘.
Written by Ha Yoon-ah and Tae Kyung-min, and directed by Kim Jae-hyun, ‘Dynamite Kiss’ follows the story of a single woman forced into an elaborate lie when she pretends to be a mother in order to secure a job at a company dedicated to recruiting women who’ve been out of the workforce.
The Plot
The story begins on a rather bittersweet note. Go Da-rim (Ahn Eun-jin) is the eldest daughter in a family where everyone else seems to be doing better professionally. Now in her 30s, she’s still studying and preparing for exams, having never held a stable job. As she continues to chase her career goals, her life takes another emotional hit when her youngest sister announces her wedding, without inviting her. Instead, Da-rim is sent on an all-expenses-paid trip to Jeju Island to keep her out of the spotlight.
Disappointed but resigned, Da-rim accepts the trip. In Jeju, she crosses paths with Gong Ji-hyeok (Jang Ki-yong), a sharp-minded consultant who’s there to meet an entrepreneur, who also happens to be Da-rim’s ex-boyfriend.
Their first meeting is awkward and unexpected, but fate reunites them at the hotel where they’re both staying. When Da-rim runs into her ex again, she impulsively asks Ji-hyeok to pose as her boyfriend. Ji-hyeok agrees, seeing it as an opportunity to get close to the businessman. When her ex grows suspicious, Da-rim ups the ante by kissing Ji-hyeok in what becomes a truly explosive moment.
The fake relationship leads to an actual date the next day, but reality soon crashes in. Da-rim is forced to rush back to Seoul after learning her mother has suffered a heart attack.
Back home, things only get worse. Da-rim discovers that her sister has mortgaged the family home and borrowed money from loan sharks to cover her husband’s debts. When the lenders demand repayment, the shock sends Da-rim’s mother to the hospital.
Now facing medical bills, mounting debt, and responsibility for her family, Da-rim desperately searches for a solution. Her part-time jobs aren’t enough, until she spots an opening at a baby product company. The catch? They’re only hiring mothers.
Cornered, Da-rim creates a bold plan: she asks her best friend Kim Seon-woo (Kim Mu-jun) to pretend to be her husband, and his son to pose as her child. The scheme works—but her carefully built lie is shaken when she discovers that Ji-hyeok is the head of the division she’s just joined.
