Today’s Actor Spotlight is one of my favourite actresses. She has been steadily growing as an actress and has surprised me with her skills development since her first drama. Let’s chat about Lee Sung-Kyung.
From model to actress
Sung-kyung, who is known for being an all-rounder, started off in the entertainment industry as a model in 2008 when she participated in the SBS SuperModel Contest. In 2013, she released a collaboration single with The Papers titled ‘I Love You’.
Her official acting debut was in 2014, with the supporting role in the SBS drama ‘It’s Okay, That’s Love’. This breakthrough role was followed by the MBC production ‘Flower of the Queen’ in 2015.
One of her most well-known roles is from the 2016 tvN series ‘Cheese In The Trap’, where she played a rather spoiled and volatile character. Her work for this role was incredible and showed a completely new side of her acting skills.
During this same year she also starred in the SBS drama ‘The Doctors’.
Leading Actress
Sung-Kyung’s first leading role was in the 2016 hit drama ‘Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-joo’. With this role she won the ‘Excellence Award, Actress in a Miniseries’ in the 2016 MBC Drama Awards.
This is one of her most remembered and loved performances, based on the real-life story of Olympic weightlifting champion Jang Mi-ran. Sung-kyung delivered a performance packed with emotional and also very wholesome moments.
In 2017 she participated in the dubbed version of the movie ‘Trolls’, and in 2018 she made her debut on the big screen with the movie ‘Love+Sling’. This same year she landed the leading role for the romantic drama ‘About Time’, and this production was followed by the movie ‘Miss & Mrs. Cops’ in 2019.
Latest works
In 2020, she starred in the SBS hit series ‘Dr. Romantic 2’, this role is one of my personal favourites from her. The character was well-rounded and her performance incredible. Watch the trailer below.
