Our vocal queens Red Velvet are finally back with their latest mini-album ‘Velvet Summer’. We’re beyond stoked as it has been quite a while since their last comeback and the magic of Red Velvet just hits differently.
Let’s jump right in!
Velvet Summer
‘Surfin’ Boy’ is their title track and the lyrics were completely written by Joy. This Dance track combines a bunch of different influences like Reggaeton, some Bossa Nova guitars and some House. I really enjoyed the earworm that is the chorus. The layered vocals are fun and overall the vibe is lovely!
Next up is ‘Hot Girls Cold Vibe’. This was written by KENZIE and follows a group of girls on a drive where they “portray beautiful moments ranging from the reliable friendship that supports each other at every moment to the romance and excitement of love.” We’re getting a Pop Dance combo that will have you bopping your head in no time.
‘Orchestra’ is a modern reinterpretation of ‘Lujon’ by (film) composer Henry Mancini. The original was used in films like ‘The Big Lebowski’, and ‘Two Lovers’. This is such a cool track, I love the flow, the progression and the opening ‘orchestra’ literally gave me chills.
After that comes ‘Hula Hoop’ which talks about “the miraculous moment of finally overlapping and touching within the circular time spent trusting each other as a ‘hula hoop’ on a midsummer night.” It’s a lovely mid-tempo pop track that is a super easy listen.
The closing track is ‘Hawaii’. Here the lyrics were also completely written by Joy. The lyrics “depict a speaker who temporarily sets aside difficult realities and heavy worries to rediscover childhood dreams and freedom as if they were in Hawaii, leaving a simple comfort and a calm, lingering resonance in the listener’s heart.” I love the snaps and the progression and their vocal harmonies.
