We’re back with a new Indie Pick and this time we’re talking about the amazing Whys Young. She’s a singer-songwriter and has released some amazing music. So let’s take a closer look at her discography.
Yoon Jiyoung
She debuted in 2017 with the single ‘Note #2’. In the beginning her English name was Yoon Jiyoung, but this summer she changed her English name to Whys Young.
This is an excerpt from her Instagram where she announced the change.
“My given name includes “智” which means “Wise.” Just like the lyrics in [Prayer], I’ve always hoped to become someone wise and to write music with wisdom.
At first, I considered using the word “Wise” to reflect that meaning—but the weight of that word felt too heavy, so I decided against it.
Instead, I chose “Whys,” which shares the same pronunciation but carries a different nuance.
It comes from the 5 Whys technique—a method of digging deeper into a problem by asking “why?” five times in order to find its root cause.
In both everyday life and while making music, my mind is constantly filled with questions. “Why?””
In 2018 and 2019 she released several singles.
Her first EP ‘Blue Bird’ came out in 2020.
Whys Young first full-length album ‘In my garden’ was released in 2023 and is still one of my favorite albums to this day.
Her most recent release is the mini-album ‘The Myth of Sisyphus’ which came out this week.
I’m very excited to follow the career of Whys Young as she continues to progress and develop her sound.
