[Review] Romance in the House

In this week’s drama review, we’re sharing our thoughts on a lighthearted and heartwarming production that had us laughing and cheering every week. Let’s dive into ‘Romance In the House’—a rom-com about love, forgiveness, and family.

Written by Kim Young-yoon and directed by Kim Da-ye, ‘Romance In the House’ follows the story of a man who, despite his past failures, works hard to rebuild his life, reunite his family, and prove to everyone that he can succeed against all odds.

The Plot

Byeon Moo-Jin (Ji Jin-Hee) was once married to Geum Ae-Yeon (Kim Ji-Soo). They fell in love and started a family, but Moo-Jin’s repeated business failures took a heavy toll on them. Their eldest daughter, Byeon Mi-Rae (Son Na-Eun), witnessed firsthand how her father’s ventures impacted their lives and saw her mother struggle to keep things together.

After his last business failure, Ae-Yeon made the difficult decision to divorce Moo-Jin, cutting him off to protect her children from further heartbreak. Mi-Rae, then a teenager, supported her mother’s decision. Moo-Jin left, believing it was the best way to stop hurting his family.

The Byeons—11 Years Later

Fast forward 11 years, Mi-Rae and her mother are now the pillars of the family. Ae-Yeon has worked hard to create a stable life, landing a steady job at a supermarket. She and Mi-Rae have become more than just mother and daughter—they’re best friends. Mi-Rae, who had to grow up quickly, focused on providing a stable life for her younger brother, Byeon Hyeon-Jae (Yoon San-Ha), and their mother.

Their quiet life is turned upside down when the owner of their villa passes away, and Ae-Yeon tries to appeal to the new landlord to avoid eviction. To her surprise, the new owner is none other than her ex-husband, Moo-Jin, who’s back and determined to fix the family he left behind.

Moo-Jin is eager to reconnect with his children, but Mi-Rae refuses to forgive him and keeps him at arm’s length, wanting to protect her mother and brother. However, her younger brother, Hyeon-Jae, is thrilled to see their dad again and fully supports Moo-Jin’s efforts to win back their trust.

Meanwhile, Mi-Rae also finds herself growing closer to Nam Tae-Pyeong (Minho), a security guard at the supermarket where her mother works. However, Tae-Pyeong is not just a regular employee—he’s secretly the son of the supermarket’s owner.
