[Review] My Wife is a Gangster

We’re back with a new film review and this time we’ve gone back to 2001 with ‘My Wife is a Gangster’.

This action romcom was directed by Jo Jin-kyu and written by Kang Hyo-jin and Kim Moon-sung. It was a hit at the box office, being the fourth highest-grossing film of that year. There are also two sequels, ‘My wife is a gangster 2’ (2003) and ‘My wife is a gangster 3’ (2006).

Plot

In the movie we follow Eun-Jin (Shin Eun-kyung). She’s a high-ranking gangster and has a whole bunch of followers. Her nickname is ‘Mantis’

As a child she lost her sister in the orphanage. However, she’s rediscovered in the hospital, ill from cancer. Her sister, Yu-jin, asks Eun-Jin to marry and since it’s one of her dying wishes, Eun-jin is on the hunt for a husband.

After a disastrous blind date, Eun-jin gets to know Kang Soo-il (Park Sang-myun) who is kind and a bit dumb. The whole thing leads to hilarious moments as Eun-jin is very boyish and doesn’t know a lot about feminine things.

The rival gang White Sharks start acting up and it leads to a confrontation between the two gangs.

Overall

‘My wife is a gangster’ has a lot of hilarious moments and characters. I’m not a super fan of the husband as he comes across as quite mean at times, but that might be because of the 23 year difference in standards.

This is a classic and if you’re into action films lead by strong female characters, definitely give this a watch.
