[Review] Love Next Door

In this edition of our drama review, we’re diving into a 2024 romantic comedy that features an incredible cast and one of our favourite tropes: childhood friends to lovers. Let’s explore ‘Love Next Door’!

Written by Shin Ha-eun and directed by Yoo Je-won, ‘Love Next Door’ tells the charming story of two childhood friends who reconnect after years apart, reigniting old feelings that lead to an inevitable love story.

A Return to the Past

Bae Seok-ryu (Jung So-min) has always been seen as a success story. After years of hard work and studying abroad, she seemed to have it all—until she returns home one day with a wave of unexpected news. Seok-ryu announces that she’s called off her engagement, quit her job, and is now looking to rediscover herself by taking a break from her old life and enjoying the simple pleasures.

Choi Seung-hyo (Jung Hae-in), Seok-ryu’s childhood friend, has practically grown up with her since his return to Korea after spending time in France. Unlike Seok-ryu, he’s more reserved and serious, but when she’s around, his lighter and playful side shines through. Their friendship runs deep, with many shared memories from their youth forming the foundation of their bond.

From Friendship to Love

Seok-ryu’s sudden return awakens old feelings in Seung-hyo, who had long decided to keep his emotions under wraps. However, as he learns the truth behind her return and sees how much she’s been struggling, his determination to keep quiet starts to waver.

Seeing an opportunity, Seung-hyo decides it’s time to confess his true feelings, but Seok-ryu’s past hurts and doubts make her hesitant about risking their friendship for something more. Together, they navigate their evolving relationship, with all its tender moments and uncertainties.

A Feel-Good Romantic Comedy

‘Love Next Door’ is a heartwarming drama that offers a candid portrayal of friendships, love, and the everyday struggles of life. With no exaggerated angst or over-the-top twists, this drama’s charm lies in its authenticity, capturing the natural obstacles many face when it comes to love and self-discovery.

The side couples and friendships add another layer of warmth and relatability, making this series a delightful watch that feels like a comforting hug.
