[Review] Irene & Seulgi – Monster

We’ve been waiting for the Irene & Seulgi mini-album ‘Monster’ for a hot minute. But it’s finally here! Though the music video is still AWOL. To be honest, it’s all quite a mess.

Monster

The title track ‘Monster’ opens the mini-album. This should have gotten a video. It was supposed to be released at 6PM KST, which was then delayed to 8PM, but it’s still not released yet. If it eventually comes out (at one point I hope) I’ll update the article and put it in.

It’s here!

‘Monster’ is a beautiful track with haunting vocals. I love the deep bass that plays throughout the song and honestly it’s top quality.

Next up is ‘Diamond’. It’s a jazzy track which matches the girls’ vocals so well. It kind of takes me back to Red Velvet’s Velvet side. I can never get enough of those tracks, so I’m extremely happy with this one.

‘Feel Good’ is the third track on the mini-album. That bass again is superb. Irene and Seulgi’s harmonies are like candy to the ears.

After that we get ‘Jelly’. This feels a little more like their red side. The little ‘what’ is adorable and had me shook. I totally did not expect that. ‘Jelly’ is a fun track and it makes me happy. It’s the perfect song to dance to in your bedroom. The brass added into it really elevates the song.

The last track is ‘Uncover’ which is a Seulgi solo. The song feels quite lo-fi to me, I didn’t know that it was exactly what I needed today. Seulgi’s vocals really get all the spotlight it deserves. The spacey instrumentation is beautiful and it makes the entire thing super dreamy.

Overall

‘Monster’ by Irene & Seulgi is a lovely first mini-album for this subunit of Red Velvet. I can’t wait to hear the live versions of all of the songs. I’m ready to be blown away by the queens of vocals.
