[Review] HEIZE – FALLIN’

Our vocal queen HEIZE is back to stun us with her new mini-album ‘FALLIN’’. I really enjoyed this line from the album description: “You must remember. The only thing you can hold on to is your heart.” Let’s dive right in!

FALLIN’

We start off with the title track ‘FALLIN’’. This track was written and co-composed by B.I which is pretty rad. I loved the nostalgic opening with the harmonica. The addition of the harp was lovely as well and Heize’s vocals are as heavenly as always. I’m very impressed with this track as it gives us a ballad that feels fresh without being repetitive.

The visuals of the music video are absolutely stunning. I love the colour grading and the various sets. The MCV was directed by Kim Intae from AFF.

It was all you’ follows that with a more rock inspired sound. I really like the layering with its solid drum and twangy guitars. Heize wrote the lyrics for this one and all of the following tracks and co-composed them as well.

After that comes ‘Broken diary’. The beat is solid and the jazzy piano makes it even better. The brass section solo with that two-step drum was freaking fantastic. I desperately need a version of this with a live band, including live strings. I think I would ascend to music heaven.

Behind the heart’ is a lovely ballad with a light, twinkling piano line and even has flutes added to the instrumentals. This feels a little Christmassy, which is perfect for the season.

Next up is ‘Dot’. This break-up song feels bittersweet. The jazz piano with the bass slides along nicely with Heize’s typical stunning lyricism. The bridge with the instrumentals partly cut was absolutely lovely and heartbreaking. The synths they added there were perfect.

We come to the track ‘Without you’. This one feels like an R&B ballad that could have perfectly fit her ‘Wish & Wind’ album from 2018. She incorporated a bit of rap into the track which makes for a dynamic listen.

‘November Song’ is the closing track of the mini. This is an instrumental outro composed by September and Lee Ki-Ho and performed on the piano by Choi Jung-hoon. It’s a stunning way to close the album.
