[Review] 6/45

If you’re looking for a feel-good comedy with heart, hijinks, and a whole lot of North-South charm, ‘6/45’ is a wild ride you won’t want to miss. Released in August 2022 and directed by Park Gyu-tae, this film takes an absurdly funny premise — a 5.7 billion won lottery ticket drifting across the Military Demarcation Line — and spins it into a hilariously unexpected bromance between unlikely comrades.

Go Kyung-pyo leads the charge as Sergeant Park Chun-woo, a South Korean soldier who becomes the accidental owner of the winning lottery ticket. But his jackpot dreams take a turn when the ticket literally floats into North Korea and lands in the hands of Junior Sergeant Ri Young-ho, played with comedic sharpness by Lee Yi-kyung. What follows is a tense-but-funny negotiation between two front-line units from opposite sides, both desperate to claim the prize while pretending to maintain national duty.

The cast delivers across the board. Eum Moon-suk adds flair as the blustery South Korean outpost commander, while Park Se-wan shines as the no-nonsense 2nd Lieutenant Ri Yeon-hee — not just Young-ho’s sister but also a voice behind North Korea’s propaganda broadcasts. Kwak Dong-yeon rounds out the main cast as Corporal Kim Man-cheol, whose slapstick comedy help move the story along with laugh-out-loud moments.

‘6/45’ blends satire, slapstick, and surprisingly touching moments with a great flow and snappy dialogue. Despite the geopolitical backdrop, it manages to feel light, heartfelt, and hilariously relatable. Whether you’re in it for the banter or the bonds, it’s a thoroughly enjoyable watch that proves sometimes, even the DMZ can’t stand in the way of a good laugh — or a winning lottery ticket.
