This week we’re proud to share our interview with drummer and producer Choi Gyu-cheol who you might know under his stage name OoOoot! He was a member of the rock band Johnny Royal and a founding members of CADEJO. He’s also performed alongside jazz legend Kim Oki.

How different is the synergy between working in a band and working solo?
밴드에서 일하는 것과 솔로로 일하는 것의 시너지는 어떻게 다른가요?
아무래도 밴드에서의 시너지는 나의 표현이 다른 멤버들을 거쳐 수정,보완 되어
더나은 소리들을 만들어 지는것에 있지 않나 생각이 드네요. 반면 솔로작업의 최고의 시너지는 제한이 없다는 것이지 않을까 생각이 듭니다. 누군가의 동의가 필요없이 마음껏 나의 생각을 나타낼수 있으니까요.
I think the synergy in a band is all about working together to make better sounds. You’re supported and guided by them. On the other hand, I think that the best synergy of solo work is that there is absolutely no limit. I can express my thoughts freely without needing someone’s consent.

저의 음악적 특성상 일반적인 리스너 분들보다는 현재 음악 활동을 하는 분들이 많이 듣는걸로 알고 있어요. 장르나 스타일에 묶이지 않고 제한없이 자신을 표현하는 방법을 공유하고 싶어요.
Because of the way my music sounds, and its characteristics, I think people who are active in music or even musicians listen to my work more than regular listeners. I just want to express myself without being tied to a genre or a style.
Where do you get your inspiration?
당신은 어디서 영감을 얻나요?
여러곳에서 영감을 받는 편입니다. 하지만 가장 많은 영감은 묵상(Praying)중에 가장많이 받습니다.
I tend to get inspiration from many places. But the most inspiration I get is when I’m praying.
How would you describe your solo music?

우리서로 솔직해 집시다’ 라고 설명 하고 싶네요.

What was the thought process behind the creation of ‘WANT’?
WANT’을 만든 배경에는 어떤 사고 과정이 있었나요?
누군가 저에게 같이 하자고 했으면 하는 스타일의 음악들이 있었지만 그 누구도(?) 저에게 먼저 말하지 않아 기다리기 지쳐서 제가 음악을 직접 만들고 피쳐링 아티스트들을 섭외 하였습니다 ☺
There were some styles of music that I wanted someone to ask me to do together, but no one asked me first. I was tired of waiting, so I made my own music and invited the artists myself. ☺

What is your favorite sound from the album and why?
앨범에서 가장 좋아하는 음악은 무엇이고 그 이유는 무엇입니까?
2번트랙 Jeremiah 입니다. 트럼펫 과 신스 사운드를 적절히 배치하고 싶어 이리저리 스케치를 해보았는데, 탐탐으로 이루어진 리듬위에 흐르듯 멜로디가 배치가 되어 너무 만족 스러운 사운드로 탄생 되었습니다.
The second track ‘Jeremiah’ is my favorite. I wanted to place the trumpet and synth sounds properly, so I played around, until the melody was arranged like it was flowing on a rhythm made of covetousness. It created a very satisfying sound.
Can you tell us a bit more about ‘DDOCKDDOCKDDOCK’?
DDOCKDDOCKDDOCK에 대해 좀 더 말씀해 주시겠어요?
오랜시간 라이브에서 호흡을 맞춰온 서사무엘 에게 100% 방향을 맞추어 작업한 곡입니다. 라이브현장에서 사운드체크 때에 주로 이런 스타일의 드럼리듬을 제가 먼저 연주하면 다른 멤버들이 이에 맞추어 연주하였고, 그위에 서사무엘이 흥얼거리듯 즉흥으로 소리를 내며 관객들과 호흡했던 시간을 보낸 무대에서의 기억이 많았는데 이 때의 느낌이 생각이 많이 나서 작업을 했어요. ‘척하면 척’ 이라는 한국 속담(?) 이 있는데요 그 느낌을 최대한 살려보고 싶었습니다.
It’s a song that’s 100% directed by Seo Samuel. We’ve been working together for a long time on live stages. During the live performances, I usually play this style of drum rhythm first, and then other members play alongside the rhythm accordingly. I remember spending a lot of time on stage where Samuel hummed and breathed with the audience. I remembered the feeling of this time and wanted to make the most of it. There’s a Korean proverb called “Just pretend.”
How did you pick which artists you wanted to collaborate with on ‘WANT’?
WANT’에서 어떤 아티스트와 협업하고 싶은지 어떻게 선택하셨나요?
3,4,5, 번트렉은 작업 시작전 피쳐링 해준 아티스트들을 정한후에 그에 맞추어 곡작업을 했구요, 2번 트렉 은 사운드를 만든후 랩퍼를 찾느라 조금 시간이 걸렸습니다. 비트가 노멀 하지는 않아 누가 좋을지 고민이 많았어요. 다행히 멋진 친구를 만났구요.
For track 3,4,5, I chose the artists who featured before the start of the work and worked on the song accordingly. Track 2 took me a while to find a rapper after making the sound. The beat wasn’t normal, so I thought a lot about who would be a good fit. Fortunately, I met a wonderful friend.
You’ve already done amazing things throughout your music career. What is still on your musical bucket list?
당신은 이미 음악 경력 내내 놀라운 일들을 해왔습니다. 당신의 음악 버킷리스트에는 아직도 무엇이 있나요?
신스모듈러와 소리들을 만들어 보고싶고, 리허설 없이 원테이크로 소리들을 좀 모아 큰 리듬섹션을 만들어 보고싶기도 해요. 가까운 시일인 6월에는 Black and Bluse 스타일의CCM 싱글이 하나 나올 것 입니다.
I want to make synth modulators and sounds. I want to make a big rhythm section by gathering some sounds in one take without rehearsals. In the near future, in June, a CCM* single in the genre of Black and Blues will be released.
