K-INDIE CHART – AUGUST

We’re back with our deepdive into the latest Korean Indie chart, this time we’re taking a look at the month August.

As you can see we have two artists completely taking over this month’s chart. HYUKOH came back with their long-awaited new album in collaboration with Sunset Rollercoaster. You can find our review of ‘that album’AAA’ here.

Then there’s also Kim Sawol who performed at the Jechon Music Festival where the theme was ‘Legend of Rock’. She played with legendary groups like Broccoli you too, 9 and the numbers and Light & Salt.

‘Suzanne’ by Kim was released in 2015 and was her first full-length solo album. ‘Romance’ and ‘Heaven came out in 2018 and 2020 respectively.

Let’s take a look at newcomer UmYull!

UmYull – Fantasy Tale

UmYull is a duo who’s been releasing music since 2022 where they debuted with ‘Courage of Kindness’.

‘Fantasy Tale’ is their first full-length album, containing 12 tracks. There are two re-recordings and ten new original songs.

‘Stealth’ is the title track and starts us off with a warm acoustic guitar and some great vocals. The melody is lovely and uplifting. I enjoyed this part of the album description: “Even if the world turns its back on you, I will protect you until the end. I believe that if we’re together, we can dream of things beyond fantasy.”

The music video contains several tracks of the album and is a whopping 23 minutes long. It feels like an anime shortfilm, so definitely give this a watch.

Tracks I recommend of this album are ‘Cloud Child’ for its excellent balance of pop and rock. The chorus is amazing! I also really enjoyed ‘One flower’ because of its pretty piano opening and how that piano suddenly starts riffing!

MGFF – SUPERGREEN

The trio from MGFF are back with their second EP ‘SUPERGREEN’. They released the album mid July and are on number 10 of this month’s chart.

The EP contains four tracks and has a double title track with ‘Shoes’ and ‘Wannabe’.

‘Shoes’ is an uplifting track that will give you courage to just take the leap. There are some great guitar sections and overall the song has a great flow to it.

‘Wannabe’ has one of the better singalong choruses I’ve heard lately. I can only imagine how good this must be live to chant along with an entire crowd.

Next up is ‘Supergreen’. This one is a love song. It’s fun, has a really great progression and the lyrics are just super sweet.

The closing track is ‘Monopoly’ and closes off the album with a great one. I really enjoyed the cabaret feel to it.
