K-Drama Review: Voice

We’re back with a new K-Drama Review, this time we’re talking about the first season of ‘Voice’. The 2017 drama is honestly a wild ride from start to finish and I loved it.

‘Voice’ is an OCN production and aired from January to March 2017. The series was written by Ma Jin-Won and directed by Kim Hong-Sun who worked on ‘Liar Game’ and ‘Black’.

It’s another police drama and was featured in my Top 5 police K-dramas, so if you want to know the other ones, go check that out.

I wouldn’t say that it’s merely a police drama though, because half of it is set in the emergency call center and that is what makes it interesting.

The plot

We have Moo Jin-Hyuk played by Jang Hyuk who you might know from ‘My Country: The New Age’, ‘Wok of Love’ or ‘Bad Papa’. He plays the cop who is left spiralling out of control after the murder of his wife. He meets our female lead Kang Kwon-Joo portrayed by Lee Ha-Na for the first time in court. She was the one who took the emergency call his wife made before she was murdered. Her co-worker’s mistake eventually leads to the woman’s death though that was left out of the official reports and Kang Kwon-Joo was the one to take the fall for it.

There’s something special with Kang Kwon-Joo’s hearing though. When she was young, she was in an accident and ever since then her hearing has improved drastically, allowing her to recognize the smallest details in a phone call and thus leading to a higher rate in rescues.

After a couple of years, the two leads meet again. Kwon-Joo wants to start the Golden Time Team that would allow for a higher success rate in rescues. She wants Moo Jin-Hyuk in her team so that they can find the actual killer of his wife.

Shady cops and baddies

There’s the usual shady cops but there’s a different level to it. I can’t say too much without spoiling the story but the cops never start off bad, circumstances and mistakes made in the past lead them to it. The extra backstories really enriched the story and made me care for all of them.

Though there’s no cop story without a good killer. And holy cannoli, this one has an AMAZING one. Though again, without spoiling the story I can’t give away too much detail. But honestly it’s one of my favorite baddies of all time.

If you’re a fan of Super Junior, you might be happy to know that Yesung has a role in the drama and to be honest, it’s adorable.

Overall

I thoroughly enjoyed the K-drama ‘Voice’ and it is definitely up there with my favorites. They also made two more seasons with different actors for the male lead, Lee Ha-Na resumes her role in season two and three. However I haven’t been able to catch up with those yet. When I do, I’ll be sure to write about it so stay tuned.

The series is available on Netflix.
