July is officially over and we’re back with our favorite Korean indie discoveries of the month. Let’s take a closer look at some of the new releases.
Week 1
Eundohee released her new album ‘unforeseen’. The entire work is an exploration of emotion and sound. The songs are written and composed by herself and it flits effortlessly between folk and electronic.
Oh Sung Woo’s debut mini-album ‘world of whales’ is a very enjoyable listen. The title track is groovy as hell. I also particularly enjoyed the way ‘no matter what dream’ was mixed. There’s a lot happening, but it feels well balanced.
Sound Kim is one groovy lady. Her songs have all been amazing and they all genuinely vibe well. I also really enjoy her vocals.
Week 2
If you need something jazzy, with really cool vocals, then take a look at the EP ‘Jungle’ by Mesani. It has some major groove and I really dig the way they layered ‘Earthquake’. It’s a major vibe.
View released her mini-album ‘In my view’ and it’s a wonderful listen. I like her vocals a lot! The song ‘I hope you’re dead’ gave me chills.
The single ‘Our days’ by Smalltown feels like nostalgia wrapped in a fresh sound. It’s a genuine song that will get you grooving.
Week 3
Jihwan debuted with his track ‘Love Song’. It’s a story about the different kinds of love we can experience. It’s acoustic folk at its best and sounds very wholesome.
SURIM came out with this wonderful ballad ‘Words of Love’. For me, this track’s blend of SURIM’s vocals, the piano played by Lee Sujin and the contrabass by Kim Hyunkyu is outstanding!
‘Ordinary Morning’ by RAM is a brilliant song that depicts our daily commute to work. It’s wonderfully mixed with ambient sounds and I love it so much! The second half of the song amps up the intensity and it’s just really, really cool.
Week 4
DONNA’s new single ‘Will you miss me?’ is a really catchy track that gives me all of the 80s synth pop vibes.
SANJO is a new discovery for me. I’m obsessed with her vocals in ‘Storm’. I love her timbre and the way she can ‘slide’ so easily into different tonalities. It’s awesome. This is only her second release, but I have high hopes for the future.
Jason Moon came out with his new single ‘When We Were Right’. The single is city pop with a bit of funk thrown in. It’s a really fun listen!
That’s it for our July Korean Indie DisKovery. I hope you found some new artists or songs to vibe to. If you had a favorite new release, let us know in the comments!
