We are back with a brand new Actor Spotlight and this time we are talking about one of my favourites. Today’s feature is the very lovable, cute, handsome and talented Lee Jong-suk.
With heavenly visuals Lee Jong-suk started off in the industry in 2005 as a model when he was sixteen and so became one of the youngest models to hit the runway during fashion week.
While being active in the modelling world he was also training to become an idol, however, he left the agency where he was training and started to concentrate on his acting career.
Acting beginnings
In 2010 he landed his first role in the drama ‘Princess Prosecutor’, in the same year he also starred in the Horror film ‘Ghost’.
Jong-suk definitely became one of my favourite actors when I saw him in the classic ‘Secret Garden’. He is a fantastic singer, his role was just super cool, different and risky but he nailed every aspect of the portrayal of this character. Below you can watch a small cut of him singing.
Between 2011 and 2012 he starred in the movies ‘As One’ and ‘R2B: Return to Base’ and the series ‘High Kick! 3’ and ‘My Prettiest Moments’. All these roles were diverse, unique and made Lee Jong-suk reassure his status of rising star in Korean Entertainment.
His role in the drama ‘School 2013’ is warmly remembered by many fans. The legendary bromance with Kim Woo-bin was sad, adorable and one hundred percent wholesome. If you haven’t watched this drama and want to know what I mean, check out the video below.
(Warning: Spoilers ahead)
During the same year he also landed his first lead roles in the drama ‘I Can Hear Your Voice’ and the movie ‘No Breathing’.
‘I Can Hear Your Voice’ is loved by many fans (including me), his role was from one side cute, youthful and adorable but at the same time very mature. It was a lovely contrast to watch and his portrayal was great.
After 2013 Jonk-suk’s career definitely took a turn, he became a top actor and the roles he portrayed from this year on were more mature, and not as youthful as the ones he played before.
Leading Life
Starting from 2014 Jong-suk starred in the dramas ‘Doctor Stranger’, which was followed by the SBS hit production ‘Pinocchio’. In both roles he did an incredible job, the characters were completely different and he portrayed them beautifully.
With his role in ‘Pinocchio’ he won the Best Actor award at the Korean Drama Awards in 2015. In 2016 he played the lead role in the drama ‘W: Two Worlds Apart’.
Most dramas where Lee Jong-suk has acted have been quite popular but ‘W: Two Worlds Apart’ is for sure one of his most memorable roles. This drama, besides having an incredible plot had an amazing cast making it earn not just high ratings but also many awards. Below you can check out the trailer.
In 2017, he starred in the thriller/action movie ‘V.I.P.’ and was the lead in the SBS drama ‘While You Were Sleeping’ along with the nation’s it girl Bae Suzy. These two had fantastic chemistry on screen and the plot was fantastic. If you haven’t watched this drama, check out the trailer and be ready to add it to your list
Next on his lengthy and fantastic filmography we have my favourite drama. There aren’t enough words to express how beautifully he portrayed his very complex role in ‘The Hymn of Death’.
This role was completely different from the other ones he has done. It wasn’t as lighthearted as many of his other drama roles, but I thoroughly enjoyed this drama. I highly recommend this story, the scenery was stunning and the story heartbreaking.
Before enlisting for the military service in 2019, Jong-suk was the lead in the romantic comedy ‘Romance Is A Bonus Book’ and I can’t wait until he finishes his service and comes back to the small screen.
