[Offstage] Yoo Young-A

In this week’s Offstage we are going through the works of a screenwriter whose work spreads across many genres. Let’s talk about Yoo Young-A. 

Debut 

Yoo Young-A debuted in 2008 as part of the team for the OBS TV drama ‘Picnic’. This same year she also wrote the dramatization of ‘The Accidental Gangster and the Mistaken Courtesan’. For the first years of her career she was mainly involved in the screenplay of movies, including ‘Wedding Dress’ (2010), ‘Always’ (2010) and ‘As One’ (2012).

During her early years in the industry, she gathered a solid experience in movies that gained a lot of attention for their stories and actors line-up. She gained a lot of attention with the 2013 drama ‘Miracle in Cell No. 7’

In an interview with Cine21, she expressed that after the sudden success of this production, she experienced a career slump, however, she kept working and was involved in the productions ‘My Paparotti’ (2013), ‘No Breathing’ (2013), ‘Steal My Heart’ (2013) and ‘The Royal Tailor’ (2014) among many other projects. 

Well-known projects

She started working in TV dramas in 2013 with ‘Bel Ami’, after working for a few year just in films she returned to writing for the small screen in 2016 with the drama ‘Entertainer’, this same year she also worked in the films ‘Like for Likes’, ‘Run-Off’ and ‘My Annoying Brother’. 

In 2017 she participated in the writing of the movie ‘Because I Love You’. The following year she wrote one of the most successful TV dramas of 2018 – 2019: ‘Encounter’, with the leading actors Song Hye-Kyo and Park Bo Gum. 

Her next movie ‘Kim Ji-Young: Born 1982’ was based on a bestseller book and it was well-received by audiences internationally,  after a couple of year hiatus in her career she returned with the drama ‘Thirty Nine’ in 2022. 

Yoo Young-A is set to write the drama adaptation of the Webtoon ‘Sacred Divorce’, set to air in the first half of 2023.
