Actor Spotlight: Park Soo Young (Joy)

Park Soo Young (aka. Red Velvet’s Joy) besides being a very talented singer and killer visual, has also surprised us with her charismatic personality and acting. For this week’s Actor Spotlight we want to share her rising acting career. Let’s start from the beginning. 

Joy’s acting debut was in 2017, when she got the lead role for the drama ‘The Liar and His Lover’. Before her debut as an actress, she had started to gain a lot of attention from her participation in variety shows and personality. 

With this series she won the 2017 OSEN Cable TV Award in the category Newcomer Award. 

After her guest role in the drama ‘The Boy Next Door’, she got the lead role for the 2018 drama ‘Tempted’. With this drama Joy showed a new side of herself, the role was complex and she was paired with known actors like Moon Ga Young, Kim Min Jae and Woo Do Hwan. 

She really delivered a good portrayal of the role, and had a lot of viewers smitten with her visuals. 

Latest Projects

Soo Young took a break from acting in 2019 and 2020 but she came back in 2021 in the JTBC production ‘The One and Only’, which had a more dark and complex plot in comparison to her previous ones. Watch the trailer below.

Her latest project was the 2022 KakaoTV series ‘Once Upon A Small Town’, in this series Joy’s role was a lot more mature and likeable, and she had an amazing chemistry with her co-lead.
